Euriade

Polka Design has been working for the Euriade since 1999. Every project is a new challenge that we master together in close collaboration.

The Euriade is a foundation that focuses on the dialogue between people with an annual theme in which the application of the ‘dialogic principle’ of the philosopher Martin Buber (1878-1965) is the main focus. This is done by organising an international festival of dialogue and the presentation of the annual Martin Buber Plaque to a person who has dedicated himself to the other in the broadest sense of the word.

In the week preceding the festival, youngsters from various countries like South Africa, Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Hungary, Austria, Romania, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium meet under the title Youth in Dialogue and engage in various activities. At the end of the week, the young people discuss with that year’s Plaque winner. Winners include: Auma Obama, Dries van Agt, Hans-Dietrich Genscher, Michael Gorbatschov, Waris Dirie, Herman van Veen, Richard von Weiszsäcker, Helmut Schmidt and the president of Rumania Klaus Iohannis.

In addition, the Euriade organises various other events such as the Orpheo concert series with classical music, where young talented musicians are given a stage in the theatre. The activities are promoted and documented through magazines, workbooks, books, poetry collections and various other publications.

Since 1999, Polka Design has designed numerous publications for the Euriade. The logos we designed for Euriade and the various projects ensure a fitting appearance and identity. The following examples are a selection of the projects we have designed and produced for Euriade.

A special project during the Covid-19 pandemic of 2020/21 was the publication ‘Our Earth? Our answers!’ that addressed both the pandemic and the climate change by having young people and other Euriade relations from different countries write stories about how they felt and their solutions for the earth. In this way, the connection that Euriade strives for was still made, even in such difficult times. In 2021, the book 'Experience what you Learn ...' was published in three languages in which Werner Janssen presents new learning methods for education.

‘The main logo we designed for Euriade is the basis of many visual expressions. The ‘E’ formed by the multicoloured squares represents the connection between cultures, opinions and nationalities. The logo is used, for example, for a silver pin designed by Goldsmith Christina Wehrens, but also in an abstract form for the background of the certificate for the Martin Buber Plaque winner.’

‘The book project ‘Our Earth? Our answers!’ was conceived during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 and was published in April 2021. It is printed on different paper stocks and is bound in a double hardcover. Because of the special binding, the book lies open almost flat. In the ‘Publishing and Editorial’ section of this site, it can be viewed in more detail.’

‘EuriArtes magazine is published twice a year. The first issue is a look back by the young people on the previous year’s Youth in Dialogue event and the awarding of the Martin Buber Plaque, and a preview of new activities. The second issue is about the current year’s theme with the upcoming plaque winner and introduces the new Youth in Dialogue students.’

‘The Orpheo concerts, also organised by Euriade, give young, often already award-winning musicians a podium in a large theatre. A small and handy brochure provides visitors with information about the musicians and the day’s programme.’

‘The Youth in Dialogue logo was developed to give an identity to this important part of Euriade. Two hearts from which sprouts from a plant are growing to emphasise that dialogue starts with you connecting to the other. They show the connection between the young people but leave each in their own dignity. The (fake) tattoo is meant to be used during the Week of Dialogue. It shows the connection with other young people who participate. The logo is also printed on shirts and wristbands the participants wear.’

‘The theme of Euriade for 2020 was ’Our Earth! our Answer!’. We called this first climate event Walk yr Talk (a lot of talk is not the answer, results are) and made a logo and some other stuff for it. The event took place with about 300 Dutch and German students. There was also a moment of contemplation where everyone could close their eyes and rethink the future.’

‘The Martin Buber Academy for Humanics is an educational activity from Euriade and is based on the ideas of the philosopher Martin Buber. The logo reflects the dialogue between two people holding each other as a basis for understanding one another and respecting the other’s opinions.

‘The ‘Kinderuniversiteit Kerkrade’ (Children’s University Kerkrade) is an activity of Euriade where children are introduced to philosophy at their own level. We designed a logo and made the text for an ad. Our happy and always curious grandson Juul was the ideal model for the photo.’

‘Euriade has also a publishing label called Erebodos. We designed the logo and design every year a book in a series that is published on the theme of the Week of the Dialogue of that year containing essays, poetry and art from selected artists. They are often published in more than one language.’

‘The ‘Child book’ is Swiss bound in a hardcover and between each spread a smaller page of thin paper is bound for the text. Abstract painter Máro, painter Rafael Ramírez and photographer Jorgen Polman took care of the illustrations. Werner Janssen wrote the text and Martin Buber Plaque winner Waris Dirie the forword.’

‘The book ‘Mephausto’ is a new interpretation from Werner Janssen of the famous saga ‘Mephisto’. This publication was intended as a workbook for a theatre play that young people had to perform on a workshop during the Youth in Dialogue week in 2019. We made a small book that fits in the palm of your hand so that you can easily handle it. The pages are bound in Japanese style with semi-transparent paper. The drawings and paintings are by Rafael Ramírez.’

‘An extra EuriArtes magazine edition with the title ‘Liebeslicht’ (Love Light) was published on the occasion of the eightieth birthday of painter Antonio Máro.’

‘Panta Rhei is a book that was published by Kunstwerkstatt Aachen (D) in cooperation with Euriade. People with Disabilities are working there together in an art workshop. As a group they call themselves ‘willsosein’ (want to be like that). The beautiful paintings they create show each person’s own inner character and the influences of the society they live in. It is extremely important that they can express themselves in this environment and show their fear, love and hope to everyone who wants to see it.’
